Introducing Dover Street Market

London based Dover Street Market is a one-of-a-kind concept store that gathers an impressive collection of brands. The store is actually a complete building with 5 or 6 floors (including under ground floors) in which you navigate using an elevator, which adds to the unique shopping experience. Raw ciment floor, industrial minimalistic furniture and… presenting shelters quickly indicate you’re about to remember the shop. It has been created by Rei Kawakubo of Japanese label Comme des Garçons so the brand is well represented but to be honest, not omnipresent.

“I want to create a kind of market where various creators from various fields gather together and encounter each other in an ongoing atmosphere of beautiful chaos: the mixing up and coming together of different kindred souls who all share a strong personal vision.” From that vision, I can tell the result is successful. Chaos is in the abundance of the most attractive designer brands but the selection isn’t “commercial” oriented. I mean, this is a place for connaisseurs with a lot of cash in the wallet. Not that you can’t find a cool gift for yourself or to offer but rather that prices remain as exclusive as the brands offered. Judge by yourself :

Kitsuné, Céline, Band Of Outsiders, Thom Browne, Cutler and Gross, Martin Margiela, YSL, Lanvin, Monocle… and so many !

As you can see, the place really feels a lot more like one giant art installation/exhibition than like a regular shop. It is quite intimidating and you’ll probably have the feeling being underdressed (this is true for the whole Mayfair district !). Reading what I just wrote gives the impression it is an uncomfortable place so maybe I’ll be misunderstood so I’ll be clear : whether you go to buy or not, just go. This is worth a look. This is worth a long, detailed and curious look !
